Granger promises UG students better funding and a Law School in next few years

The chronically cash-strapped UG needs a quadrupling of the subvention it receives from government to adequately cover its operation but , APNU+AFC Presidential candidate David Granger told students during a presentation earlier this evening.
David Granger- APNU AFC Presidential Candidate.

He did not say that government, even a APNU+AFC government, could finance a four-fold increase in the subvention, though he is convinced that “it is impossible to provide the sort of funding (needed) from donors.”

Continuing he said “it cannot come from the students…it has to come from the state.” The presentation was planned by the University of Guyana Student Society (UGSS) in the university’s George-Walcott Lecture Theatre (GWLT).

In an interview following the presentation Granger told Demerara Waves that he would only be able to give specific numbers when the coalition gets into power and becomes intimate with the state’s accounts.

In recent times, UG has encountered major difficulties paying salaries and utility bills.
Moses Nagamootoo-Coalition PM Candidate

He also promised to pull political appointees from the university’s Council, substituting them with academia-oriented individuals possessing the capacity and vision to improve the university. The presence of party members on the university’s Council has been a sore point for several years but tonight Granger said “We need a Council of persons committed to higher education, who will sit down and make academic decisions to make sure that this university gets what it needs …”
Students listening to David Granger

Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) members to the Council include former government minister Bibi Shaddick, who also serves as the university’s Pro-Chancellor, and Presidential Advisor Odinga Lumumba.

Rupert Roopnarine is among the opposition’s representatives on the Council.

Current and prospective law students will be happy to know that the APNU + AFC coalition will also seek to establish a local law school, thus enabling UG LLB graduates to pursue their Legal Education Certificates (LEC) in Guyana, as opposed to being required to go to Hugh Wooding Law School (HWLS) in Trinidad and Tobago.

“I cannot say that it is something that can be achieved in the first year or two…but in the first five years…law student can look forward to completing their LEC in Guyana,” Granger said.

Currently only UG’s top graduating 25 LLB students are guaranteed entry into HWLS yearly. All others must sit the entrance examination which is very competitive as Guyanese must compete with LLB holders from all across the Caribbean. Further, as of last year, law students continue to labour under less than adequate certainty that the agreement which facilitates their automatic entry into HWLS will continue to stand.

Tonight’s engagement comes following weeks of failed attempts on the part of UGSS to get the presidential and prime ministerial candidates of the major political parties – APNU + AFC coalition and the PPP/C – to engage in a debate before UG students.

UGSS President Joshua Griffith informed his executive earlier this week that the PPP/C has “indicated that the only debate they have committed to is the Private Sector Debate and they will be moving forward in that direction.”

The PPP/C’s apprehension to partake in such a debate is likely linked to the adverse reception its candidates sustained during a pre-elections debate at UG in 2011. Another engagement is planned for Tuesday at 14:00hrs between students and the presidential candidate of The National Independent Party (NIP), Saphier Hussain.

I would “have (had) to be a very reckless politician not to come to speak to students…especially just five days before” elections next Monday,” an enthusiastic, and often humorous Granger said to the students.

During the question and answer segment Granger was asked to explain why APNU and AFC cut amounts intended for Student Loans for part and continuing students at the university. Last year, the parties combined to cut more than $30billion from the initially $220billion 2014 budget.

He told students that while the parties were not desirous of cutting all of the amounts that were eventually taken out, some allocations they opposed, such as money intended for the National Communications Network (NCN) and the Guyana Information Agency (GINA), were “bundled” with amounts with which they approved of, such as $450million for student loans.

On the day the amount was cut, and for days following, the opposition parties continued to explain to the public that they did not want to cut the amount, but that their hands were tied. They also said that they would approve the amounts immediately if it was brought back “unbundled” from contentious line items. Several students remarked “ohhhhh, following Granger’s explanation, while one other shouted “we understand, we forgive yuh.”

Granger was also asked to explain what he planned to do to enforce the constitutional provision which speaks to free education from nursery to tertiary institutions. This is set out in Article 27 of the Constitution of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. He noted though, that while he is in support of, and would again support free education in the manner described, the relevant Article is not enforceable in the courts

Join our call for the seeding of world peace thoughts in world leaders

A tiny group in a tiny country has started the intent to seed the thought of world peace in the minds of key decision makers worldwide.

Bob Marley spread the thought of one love.
UN Secretary-General and all the Governments represented within the United Nations, - We, the undersigned, urge you to use all the powers which are invested within you to stop the wars which are going on, together with all the parties concerned, and to stop the war-mongering which is going on, wherever the sources are; wars which have the potential of resulting in a world war. -

Granger to make Corentyne the “cutting edge” of the economy".

The APNU+AFC Coalition on Sunday unveiled several policies and offered assurances that it would put in place if it wins the next elections.
Massive APNU AFC crowd in former PPP stronghold.

The party took its Unity Rally to the Corentyne Village of Whim and brought out thousands of Berbicians and other citizens.

Both David Granger and Moses Nagamootoo, the coalition’s Presidential and Prime Ministerial Candidates respectively promised residents that not only will an APNU+AFC government make the Corentyne safer with special emphasis on piracy but will make the region the “cutting edge” of the economy.
Prepare early to get your act together for voting on May 11

Crime has been one of the major issues affecting the Corentyne region for years.

The coalition also promised a possible 50% reduction in the Berbice Bridge toll and continued support for the sugar and rice industries along with other entrepreneurial initiatives. The coalition made it clear that the sugar industry will not be closed.
Moses Nagamootoo APNU AFC Prime Ministerial candidate

Granger paid special attention to security and said the ruling Party has taken Corentyne for granted for way too long, regarding it as a
vote farm while the region continues to suffer at the hands of criminals. He said residents have been migrating in droves to other parts of the country and across the world.

He promised to tackle the high incidents of traffic accidents, eradicate piracy and improve police response time to emergencies and everyday criminal activity.

“I have come back to Corentyne with a sense of vision to clean up this mess that the PPP has left,” Granger said as he rolled out his own plan for economic development of the region and the country at large.
APNU AFC Presidential Candidate David Granger

Mr. Granger reiterated his plan for improvement of education. He said the APNU+AFC plans to create value added enterprises which is expected to increase employment and generate more revenue. He said Corentyne is an unhappy place for many with the frequent incidents of suicide but noted it is an issue an APNU+AFC government will also seek to address.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nagamootoo who defended his political career as one characterized by honesty and humility told the home crowd that the coalition will formalize a code of conduct for all its ministers and public officials to ensure they serve the will of the Guyanese people with respect.

He promised too that the coalition will set a date for the holding of long overdue local government elections, increasing public servants salary by 10% and increase old age pension within the first 100 days in office.

Nagamootoo also spoke of opening lands in the region for various types of agricultural initiatives. The coalition speakers were adamant that the ruling Party has mismanaged the country and fostered racial hostility but says its national unity government will deliver a better life for all Guyanese.

Moses parts the red sea at Whim--Largest multi ethnic rally in Guyana

Moses Nagamootoo delivered the goods to the APNU AFC. As he had predicted the coalition broke through in this PPP stronghold delivering a crowd estimated at more than 10,000 from all over the Corentyne and Guyana. Two huge motorcades converged on Whim from Georgetown and Skeldon.
Here are some choice quotes.

Moses Nagamootoo says he had never sold his country's natural resources for an honorary doctorate or to be called a champion; I have never asked for not have I been given an inch of state land or lived in a state house...

Nagamootoo says he lived on the bare minimum. Donated his salary to Freedom House to make up salaries of workers; says he has never traveled first class as a minister.

Moses Nagamootoo says the real PPP president should stand up.

Nagamootoo says Ramotar not interested in tackling corruption. He  refused to set up procurement commission.

Moses Nagamootoo says the government has built a hotel with the public's money called the Bharriot.

But Jagdeo will not shut up because we have to pay him a pension of 3 million dollars. Unfortunately it is this nation that has to fetch him like a "goady"

Nagamootoo asked the crowd, "Do you want Chickungunya Ramotar again"? They shouted No!

On May 11th We will cut out the waste, the corruption and cut out the fake President.

Moses Nagamootoo says the election is about seeing the difference in character between David Granger and Donald Ramotar; says the elections is about choosing a PM who you know and who will serve you.

Moses Nagamootoo says the fake president flies out on a private jet while the average citizen can't get panadol .

I was the first minister who refused to accept an increase in my salary unless the government pay more to teachers and nurses. -

Had Jagan been alive today, not his son, not his daughter, he would have said that this is the party that he wants for Guyana.

We will like to see all our government operate with a code of conduct so that they do not steal tax payers money and walk around with fake teeth so that they can smile at our misery.

This (PPP) is no longer the mortal party of Jagan. This (PPP) is sodom and Gomarrah.

Granger's speech at massive Whim Rally on the Corentyne

Here are quotes from Granger's speech to a massive crowd estimated at 10,000 +
People came from all over Guyana to Whim for a huge AFC APNU rally

Granger says for first time six parties have demonstrated they are willing work together for the good of Guyana.

Granger says we will only stem the tide of migration if they make Guyana a favorable option.

Corentyne has turned their back on the PPP. They could never have believed that something like this could have happened in ‪#‎Whim‬
Massive rally at Whim , former PPP stronghold.

The Minister responsible for the police force is not capable of doing his job.

People can't find jobs. It is a problem for our young people, it is a problem for our families but more that it is a problem of Governance

The Corentyne is the cutting edge of Guyana's Economy -
We will support opportunities for investment. We are going to support our young people to start up enterprises.

Granger says PPP didn't care about Corentyne. The coalition will eradicate piracy. Rohee doesn't care, he doesn't come to these parts.
Whim , Corentyne. Last Night

Granger says will set up police force that will answer your call in 2 mins not 2 hours

The PPP let the opposition gain strength after 2011

Ralph Ramkarran laments what might have been if the PPP “now reactive and on the back foot” had made political deals instead….

In an article on his website Conversation Tree Ralph Ramkarran assesses the PPP approach to its public since 2011. I have taken out certain quotes from this article. You can read the full article here.

"The PPP could have been facing the electorate in completely different circumstances. Displaying a woeful lack of foresight, it sat back and allowed its opponents to unite, rather than keeping them competing for influence, as they had been doing after the elections. The exposure of the Government/Granger Linden electricity deal by the AFC in 2012 comes to mind. Now, the APNU+AFC political alliance threatens the PPP’s hold on political power.

Had it established an early coalition government with APNU after being reduced to a plurality in 2011, the electorate would have been asked at these elections to return a PPP+APNU, not an APNU+AFC, alliance to office. We could have been in a transformative era in Guyana’s politics, in accordance with Cheddi Jagan’s legacy. It is the AFC which is now claiming this mantle. True or not, this claim will resonate during the campaign aided by an APNU+AFC campaign strategy of offering change, reform and renewal, always an attractive strategy when facing an incumbent in office for 22 years.
David Granger APNU AFC Presidential Candidate

Both the government and the electorate have inevitably succumbed to the fatigue generated by incumbency. Both have become jaded and have lost enthusiasm. The government has lost the capacity to innovate. ..

The PPP has been on the back foot and reactive since it lost its majority in 2011. The APNU+AFC alliance and its confident, upbeat launching last Wednesday in an electric atmosphere will keep the PPP on the back foot, if their campaign is supplemented with a credible programme. The only response of the PPP is its record from 1992 to the present and of the PNC’s past. Advances made since 1992 no longer inspire because conditions before 1992 are distant memories. The PPP does not refer to its record from 2011 to the present during which time, according to the just published LAPOP poll, there has been a sharp decline in optimism about politics and the economy."

APNU AFC will set up Diaspora department

Guyanese braved a cold New York Friday night to meet with the APNU+AFC Presidential and Prime Ministerial Candidates.
Granger campaigning in Guyana

The fundraising event was held at the Woodbine Hall in Brooklyn and the Guyanese who gathered there were told by the candidates that “it is time for Guyana to change”.

Presidential Candidate David Granger told the gathering that an APNU+AFC government would set up a Department of the Diaspora which would focus on the needs of Guyanese living overseas who still have an interest in Guyana and who still want to return to Guyana and invest or remigrate. That department, according to Mr. Granger, will allow Guyanese who live overseas to be more connected to business back home and to prepare a path for them that would make doing business in Guyana much easier...
Enthusiasm for APNUAFC in NY

The current administration he said, has led the way in encouraging others to take  out many of Guyana’s raw products with little benefits to the country. He spoke about poverty across the Guyana landscape and the absence of basic infrastructure for many Guyanese who are still home...

Mr. Granger told the gathering that the APNU+AFC team offers hope for a new Guyana and he wants that hope to be embraced by Guyanese at home and abroad.

“North America, tonight I bring you a message of hope. But I want you to understand that this is a sober decision that we have made. It is good to have fun but the possession of our nation is what is at stake. We want to ensure that every Guyanese child could have that good life to which you aspire”, Granger said.

He said he gets very emotional about Guyana because the country should not be at the bottom of the ladder of human development, and the country does not have to be crime ridden and poverty stricken. “These things have been brought about because a few greedy men have been depriving a large number of needy people of a good life. The greedy must not overwhelm the needy and this is what the PPP has been doing for the past 23 years.”

Granger’s running mate, Prime Ministerial Candidate Moses Nagamootoo told the crowd that Guyana has moved away from the dreams of its fore-parents and it was now time to rescue the nation from the PPP.
According to Nagamootoo, the struggle ahead will be tough but it  is one that could be won.

He said the APNU+AFC Coalition is seeking victory for the small man because “indeed we are fighting Goliath who has imbibed in the ass kicking culture because they know that culture well because you can kick if you know to receive kick backs.”

The audience was told that Guyana needs national unity and a system whereby the winner does not take all.  That system is what the APNU+AFC has to offer.

Let The Power Fall on I

The average Guyanese voter will wake up on the morning of the 11 May 2015 with the fate of the new Guyana in his or her hands. As she or he brushes the teeth and looks in the mirror thoughts of the power of this day will flow into that voter’s mind. That voter will have to face up to the two greatest barriers preventing the average person from achieving success—fear and doubt.
Daid Granger- Guyana's visionary leader

I love a song made by Max Romeo in Jamaica in the early 70’s. (This will make the young see me as a fossil!). It was the song that awoke the masses of Jamaica and propelled Michael Manley and the PNP to power in 1972. It was called ‘Let the power fall on I’  ( Lyrics here )It is a tremendous invocation—a calling of the supreme power to flow through one.

So as I see this voter pondering about the day I hear in my mind:
Oh, let the power fall on I, far I
Let the power fall on I
Oh, let the power from Zion fall on I

The ruling party has put its faith in the power of manipulation. It is quietly confident that it has put overwhelming fear into those of its supporters who were thinking of voting for APNUAFC. It is also confident that it has put doubt into the minds of some possible APNU AFC voters. ‘There is no point in voting. Don’t think of voting for the opposition. We have got this thing sewn up. We have won before.’

In my head I hear Max Romeo thunder out:
Let the power fall on I
Oh, divide justice, peace and love far I
Divide justice, peace and love

Today, dear voter Guyana needs you to be strong, to have courage, to stand up for yourself, your loved ones, for your country. Go beyond fear. Go beyond doubt. Become a winner. Join the winning team-APNUAFC. You hold the power in your hands to transform your life and your country.

Max invokes for you. He asks, then says:
How long will the wicked reign far I?
Oh, let the wicked burn in flames far I
Let the wicked burn in flames

So dear voter fill yourself with power from above. Lift your heard, square your shoulders, put a winning smile on your face. Imagine how proud you will feel when you say to your friends:’ On May 11 I showed my love for Guyana by voting for the APNUAFC  team. I linked my dream for a decent, disciplined, secure and prosperous Guyana with President David Granger and Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo. I was part of history. I believed in winning. I destroyed fear and doubt. I thought for myself. I did not let my mind be manipulated.
David & Sandra Granger Moses & Sita Nagamootoo

Oh, let the power fall on I, far I
Let the power fall on I
Oh, let the power from Zion fall on I

God Bless a united Guyana!

The man of death... aiming at your dream

This is the dark time, my love,
All round the land brown beetles crawl about
The shining sun is hidden in the sky
Red flowers bend their heads in awful sorrow

This is the dark time, my love,
It is the season of oppression, dark metal, and tears.
It is the festival of guns, the carnival of misery
Everywhere the faces of men are strained and anxious

Who comes walking in the dark night time?
Whose boot of steel tramps down the slender grass
It is the man of death, my love, the stranger invader
Watching you sleep and aiming at your dream.
Martin Carter

Martin Carter wrote this famous poem in 1953 about the British invaders aiming at the dream of Guyanese nationhood.

AS Guyanese seek to understand the assassination of one man with bullhorn struck down at night on a lonely road Martin's words echoed in my head. The forces of darkness as David Granger aptly said have struck him down. They were aiming at his dream, our dream--a free, happy open, united society.
Cheddi Jagan & Martin Carter ijailed by the British

Let us examine Courtney Crum -Ewing's last few months of life. What images spring to mind?

A one man protest against the nation's leading law maker - the Attorney General.
Crum-Ewing was expressing his shock that the nation's law maker was threatening extra judicial killing. The AG  was suggesting that rich people like him did not have time to use the normal rule of law. The elite in charge of the country just had to pick up the phone and the problem would be solved. I suppose that he meant that a 'hit' would be arranged and the crime syndicate would punish the offender with 'execution'. (see transcript)

David Granger leading the cjharge against the forces of darkness

The foul language call initiated by the AG also had the theme of disrespect to women. The AG began the call by asking for the name of the female reporter because his uncle wanted to have sex with her. The conversation ended with the AG trying to force the reporter to give the name.

Although Courtney was alone most of the time there were occasions when others joined to express the shock of the society and to call for the AG's dismissal. The President did not call on his minister to resign focusing on the taping of the conversation calling it 'illegal' . So again two pictures of law.

Even though three members of his party expressed shock at the AG's disrespectful comments about women, he failed to say anything about this, The society filed this response  with the disgraceful way in which former First Lady Varshnie Singh was treated by former President Bharrat Jagdeo.
Time for the dream of a united, happy Guyana

So we have images of two kinds of law--the regular one with police investigation and court procedures; the other one -that of crime syndicates and the narco criminals.
Courtney expressed his purpose in protesting in these words.

“It is the arrogance of those in authority that motivates me…How can the President profess that they all stand in solidarity with a man who clearly has no respect for the women of his country?”
He went on to say, “If you listen to that tape, it is appalling. I let it play in public transportation that I use every day and people listen to it.”
When asked what he expects will be the result of his picketing exercise, the man told this newspaper that he expects Nandlall would resign at some point. Crum-Ewing expressed that “Guyanese are very aware of the lawlessness and we are fed up…  It is just that the political culture does not allow the average Guyanese to express themselves without being victimized.”

We also have an images of a ruling elite from Queen's College and from super rich people. Alyssa Trotz has written in Stabroek News asking which QC image the AG was projecting. Also many outstanding QC students have signed a letter expressing solidarity with their OC comrade Courtney .  So on one hand we have a foul mouthed man with no respect for ordinary people and the regular law contrasted with a man who was a patriot and principled.

Courtney's killing happened in a context where a Presidential advisor Kwame Mc Koy twice disrupted meetings designed to bring out more youth voters. Also former President Bharrat Jagdeo urged the present President to 'kick some asses'.

We have images of reckless , crude force. We have pictures of shutting up free expression.
Courtney Crum-Ewing leading us with determination & courage
Courtney was one voice but the crime elite saw him as a deep threat. They sent their people to destroy his mini bus. Sadly people saw this intimidation but did nothing. The police took him in for questioning after he used the washroom at the AG's building.

Again an image of the law out of place. The police not doing what was expected in a normal law abiding society.

So Courtney stood alone with a fog horn urging people to come out and vote--to defeat the powers of darkness with love, imagination and creativity. Guyanese have to be clear, firm and courageous. Hold fast to the dream of a united society attracting peace, security and abundance.

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
Langston Hughes
