Some Great Benefits of Listening to Classical Music

Traditionally Classical music has  been viewed as a status symbol. It was often associated with the super rich. These people could afford to get  an orchestra  to perform at their functions.

Today, however, although it has largely remained that way technology with its music streaming platforms makes it relatively easy to get the world's greatest classical music on your phone or ipad. As I write this I am listening to Baroque classical music on my ipad from CBC Radio Two in Canada.

There are several benefits to listening to classical Music. Studies have shown that classical music has positive effects on your brain .shapes your mood and boosts physical performance.

Brain Boost!
Many people talk about a concept called  the “Mozart Effect.” They believe that listening to music, particularly classical music, made people smarter. The idea is that if children or even babies listen to music composed by Mozart they will become more intelligent.

The scientific results have been mixed but there is an abundance of positive anecdotal evidence. Read this article on the BBC which discusses the effect of music on the brain.

There is a website called the Mozart Effect which has resources and material promoting the Mozart Effect. In its mission statement it says it"uses music as a powerful catalyst for healing, creativity and development."

In one study done by Chakravarthi Kanduri, Computational Biology Researcher at the University of Helsinki, participants were split into two focus groups. The first had musical experience, and the second did not. From his experimental research  Kanduri concluded, “listening to classical music enhanced the activity of genes that are mainly related to reward and pleasure, cognitive functions and proper brain function.”

Healing Properties.
I personally believe in the healing power of music. In the late 80s I read an article by Dr. Stephen Halpern who was then initiating the demand for healing music. In 1988 I was going though a period of depression and I extensively used Halperm's music and SRF music to shift my thinking to a positive level.

Music helps release the stress of being ill; it can vitalize, inspire and reduce pain.

In 2009 I had to do surgery on my eyes. I was surprised that my doctor used classical music during the operation. When I asked about it he said it helped him and his staff to focus and also lifted the mood of patients. He said that surgeons worldwide used music in this way.

I am a fan of the late great trumpeter Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong. I was privileged to see him perform in person as a young student at Queen's College in Guyana. His 'When the Saints go Marching in' was my special favorite. There is a Louis Armstrong Department of Music theraphy at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Israel. Music therapists within The Louis Armstrong Center for Music & Medicine provide clinical services for the community.

There is much research on the importance of auditory stimulation in health. The ear is essential for balance, language, expression and spatial orientation. Music and rhythmic patterning are used extensively before and after surgery and for patients who have had strokes and head injuries.

Stress-Relief and Mood Changer.

If you’re feeling sad or overwhelmed, take a few moments to listen to some classical music. Just like its healing properties, it has a positive effect on mood and stress.
Studies show that it has the same physiological effects as a massage. Classical music soothes you, calms you down and makes you feel happier..

Better sleep
Classical music is so potent in calming the mind, your body naturally follows and also enters a more relaxed state. This has proven extremely effective with people suffering from insomnia.  Classical, along with white noise and natural sounds, are favorites for therapists to use when conducting sleep therapy.
