Tesla completely powers Samoan Island with solar power

The Ta'u Island in American Samoa in now completely run with Tesla power packs. In a tweet published Tuesday, Tesla Motors announced that the island now runs on nearly 100 percent solar energy, thanks to more than 5,300 solar panels and 60 Tesla Powerpacks.

After the successful $2.6 billion acquisition of SolarCity in Nov. 21, Tesla utilized SolarCity's microgrid system to provide sustainable solutions to energy generation. Before the introduction of solar energy, the island used to rely on 109,500 gallons of diesel per year or $8 million in fuel costs.

Ta'ū is the largest island in the Manu'a Group and the easternmost volcanic island of the Samoan Islands. With only 600 residents, they used to depend on imported oil from the U.S., Asia, Central America, and Australia to run its generators. Now, the island can have electricity 24/7 with 1.4 megawatts (MW) of solar energy generation capacity (5,328 SolarCity solar panels) and 6 megawatt hours (MWh) of energy storage capacity (60 Tesla Powerpacks).

The project was funded by the American Samoa Economic Development Authority, the Department of the Interior, and the Environmental Protection Agency. A report from Business Insider stated how the project promotes cleaner energy sources in Dubai and Hawaii. With this new technology, the residents in the area hope to decrease the global carbon footprint around the globe.

In a Tesla blog post, local resident Keith Ahsoon explained that the project "will help lessen the carbon footprint of the world." Originally run on diesel, the burning fuel through generators are seen as bad for the environment and are expensive due to the fluctuating oil and gas markets.

"Living on an island, you experience global warming firsthand. Beach erosions and other noticeable changes are a part of life here. It's a serious problem, and this project will hopefully set a good example for everyone else to follow," Ahsoon added.

Tesla’s solar roof will be cheaper than ordinary roofs

Elon Musk says Tesla’s solar roof will be cheaper than ordinary roofs.
Elon Musk--TED talk

Elon Musk said his company’s roofs will be cheaper than ordinary roofs. He also said the energy-generating roofs will last longer than typical roofs.

From Wikipedia - About Elon Musk.He is the founder, CEO, and CTO of SpaceX; co-founder, CEO, and product architect of Tesla Motors; co-founder and chairman of SolarCity; co-chairman of OpenAI; co-founder of Zip2; and founder of X.com which merged with PayPal of Confinity. As of June 2016, he has an estimated net worth of US$11.5 billion, making him the 83rd wealthiest person in the world.

At first, Tesla solar roofs will be a premium product, according to Bloomberg, as the company’s slate and terra cotta tiles are 20 times more expensive than asphalt shingles. But that factor could become irrelevant because of reduced shipping costs. It’s expensive to ship traditional roof tiles because they’re so heavy and fragile. Musk said Tesla’s solar tiles are easier to ship and weigh around a fifth of what regular tiles weigh.

Tesla’s tile roofs will be cheaper to both manufacture and install, according to Musk, and will provide savings to a homeowner even before energy bill savings. He said ,“Electricity is just a bonus.”

Not only could Tesla solar roofs ultimately save owners a lot of money, the sleek solar roof design could convince more people to go solar. Musk said, “The key is to make solar look good."

The solar roofs will be made of tempered glass in four styles: Tuscan, slate, textured, and smooth. The innovative tiles come with solar cells invisible to a casual observer, a color louvre film layer to enable the tiles to blend in, and a tempered glass layer. Tesla says the electricity from the roofs can be immediately utilized or stored in a Powerwall battery.

The company aims to have their solar roofs available by the summer of 2017.
