Sloth, lies and incompetence in the world of GECOM
Georgetown, Guyana: November 30th, 2011 -- Guyanese are waking up on day 2
after the elections and not much has changed. There is continued foot dragging
by GECOM, more stories about documents and equipment being removed from
ministries, PPPC false reporting of victory on NCN this morning, stories of
attempts to compromise ballot boxes and growing anxiety and concern on the part
of Guyanese citizens. The media in Guyana is largely in "wait and see mode".
There are no tough questions for GECOM or the PPPC, no challenging analysis, no
real in-depth reporting of regional voting trends or changes, absolutely
nothing of substance offered that would serve to elucidate matters concerning
this historic election. One outfit has even gone as far as irresponsibly
reporting a PPPC victory with 31% votes in and a 2000 vote PPPC margin. God
help Guyana!
At no time in recent history in Guyana has ballot counting
taken this long. As the world watches and waits, two things are becoming
increasingly clear. The first is that the delays are by design and the second
is that GECOM is in cahoots with the PPPC party. GECOM is essentially
compromised. Citizens will do well to remember that what the PPPC lacks in
ability to run a government, they more than make up in devious, underhanded,
psychological tactics.
OVNN attributes the delayed or cancelled,
less-than-informative GECOM press conferences, the intermittent PPPC
declarations of victory on facebook and on NCN news and the maddeningly slow
rate of ballot counting points to the goal of socializing an increasingly
anxious public to the idea of another 5 years of PPPC corruption and
mismanagement in Guyana.
Their second motive in delaying is to slowly reduce the
level of emotions in Guyanese citizens so that by the time they announce a
rigged victory, the people will have already been resigned. OVNN believes that
the PPPC has underestimated the commitment to liberation Guyanese citizens now
share. Guyanese citizens are close to too victory. Guyanese citizens are too
close to emancipation. Guyanese citizens are too close to change, and they will
not be cowed, cheated or intimidated into accepting the results of a rigged
election.
OVNN once again calls on the PPPC government to end their ongoing
efforts to incite, intimidate, compromise and now to undermine the democratic
rights of citizens in Guyana. GECOM must end the charade of "slow but
careful counting" and expeditiously account to Guyanese citizens on the
preliminary results of the 2011 presidential elections. With each passing hour
of no results, people grow more suspicious. Guyanese are a peaceful people,
they are a reasonable people but these attributes do not preclude them from
insisting on "equal rights and justice". GECOM and the PPPC
government will do well to remember this.
GEOCOM is a mirror of this government. They can't efficiently run a simple excercise like counting of votes.
